NUS Unveils 'Arts For All' Framework for Enhanced Student Learning

  • The National University of Singapore (NUS) is introducing new initiatives to enhance the undergraduate learning experience through artistic pursuits. The 'Arts For All' (AFA) framework, developed by the NUS Office of Student Affairs Centre for the Arts (OSA CFA), aims to provide more opportunities for students to engage in the arts and gain academic recognition for their passion and skills. Piloted since August 2023, AFA will be progressively implemented, with the highlight being the launch of the Second Major or Minor in Performing Arts starting in August 2024.

Associate Professor Chan Tze Law, NUS Vice Dean of Students overseeing CFA, emphasized the long-standing presence of creative and performing groups at NUS and the evolution of student interest groups into structured programs. The new framework encourages students to explore the creative space at their own pace, offering avenues for academic recognition of their efforts in honing artistic skills. The goal is to cultivate artists and creative leaders within the university community.

The AFA framework is designed to enhance the student life experience at NUS and promote greater participation in the arts as part of the university's commitment to interdisciplinary teaching and learning. Based on collaboration and outreach principles, AFA provides diverse artistic learning opportunities categorized into four types, allowing students to engage with the arts according to their developmental objectives, interests, and commitment levels.

Within the AFA framework, foundational and exploratory learning opportunities are provided to a broader range of students, encompassing ground-up and student-led community initiatives and participation in various on-campus student arts groups. For those seeking a more structured academic approach to deepen their artistic practice, credit-bearing performing arts groups are available, allowing students to enhance their skills in various performing art forms that intersect with other disciplines.
