Metaverse Gateway Providing a Glimpse of Bhutan's Art and Culture

  • Bhutan has entered the world of metaverse technology with the launch of a platform called Bhutanverse. This virtual space allows people globally to experience Bhutan through a computer-generated environment. Bhutanverse showcases the country's culture, history, and philosophy, incorporating Bhutanese art and architecture.

The platform also features interactive quests based on Bhutan's history and folklore. The initiative was launched to celebrate the 44th anniversary of the Bhutanese King's birth, and it was developed in collaboration with Druk Holding and Investments, a commercial arm of the Royal Government of Bhutan, along with Singapore-based Smobler and Sandbox, a virtual gaming world.

Ujjwal Deep Dahal, the CEO of DHI, described Bhutanverse as a hub for Web3 innovation, bringing together global and Bhutanese artists, developers, and innovators. The virtual world aims to connect audiences with Bhutan's natural and cultural heritage using Web3 technologies. The project launch was followed by a Bhutanverse Design Challenge, inviting local talent to contribute design concepts. Selected candidates received training sessions on metaverse tools and contributed to co-designing Bhutanverse.

Sujal Nepal, a computer science student from Bhutan, shared his excitement about the transformative journey of building Bhutanverse. The team learned new skills to translate Bhutan's beauty into the digital world, providing fresh possibilities for others to experience the country's culture and natural wonders.

Loretta Chen, Co-Founder and CEO of Smobler, highlighted Bhutan's commitment to embracing new technologies, citing initiatives such as a blockchain-based National Digital Identity program and various Web3 endeavors. The launch of Bhutanverse reflects the country's engagement with emerging technologies.
