Lingnan Univ. hosts QS China Summit Panel on Digital Innovation

  • Lingnan University actively engaged in the QS China Summit 2024 in Shanghai, emphasizing the pivotal role universities play in advancing China's global presence in higher education. The summit, themed "Remaining Distinct in Global Higher Ed: China's Place in the New World of Education," provided a platform for exploring this topic. 

    As part of its strategy to enhance international recognition, Lingnan hosted a President Panel Discussion titled "Fostering Distinction in Chinese Higher Education Through Digital Innovation," which facilitated insightful conversations on the intersection of Chinese higher education and digital innovation.

    During the summit, Prof S. Joe Qin, Lingnan University's President and Wai Kee Kau Chair Professor of Data Science, highlighted the university's commendable performance in the 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject. Notably, Lingnan's Social Policy and Administration secured the 2nd position in Hong Kong, 4th in the Greater China region, and 9th in Asia, while Philosophy achieved 3rd in Hong Kong and 12th in the Greater China region. 

    President Qin underscored Lingnan's innovative teaching methods, such as providing universal access to ChatGPT and integrating generative AI into the curriculum for first-year students in the upcoming academic year. The course will cover essential aspects of generative AI, including conceptual fundamentals, evaluation techniques, and ethical considerations, aiming to equip students with practical skills in model implementation, evaluation, and refinement.

    President Qin emphasized that these AI initiatives reflect Lingnan's commitment to educational advancement and its unique whole-person education model. By merging cutting-edge technology and pedagogy, Lingnan aims to prepare students for success in the digital age while nurturing critical thinking skills, which are indispensable despite AI's capabilities. President Qin also highlighted Lingnan's potential contribution to the development of the Greater Bay Area by leveraging its distinctive educational approach to complement the mainland's educational model, thereby further distinguishing Chinese higher education.
