Korea University Starts Global Sustainability Lecture Series

  • The Global Sustainability Lecture Series, organized jointly by Professor Rhee Jay-hyuk from the Business School and Professor Ok Yong-sik from the Division of Environmental Science and Ecological Engineering at Korea University, has commenced. This series, conducted entirely in English and available online at no cost from April to December 2024, features renowned scholars from the United States, Europe, and Korea specializing in ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) topics.

The lectures cover a wide array of subjects including ESG-related policies in various countries, urgent environmental issues such as critical minerals, batteries, climate change, biodiversity, waste management, and hydrogen energy, as well as sustainability evaluation methods and the practical application of evaluation outcomes.

In August, Professor Rhee Jay-hyuk will deliver a keynote speech, accompanied by experts and panelists from diverse countries, to explore the significance and optimal strategies of ESG management. The primary objective of the Global Sustainability Lecture Series is to establish a vital global knowledge network by uniting leading ESG experts and practitioners worldwide. This network aims to provide a solid framework for South Korean companies to adapt to the demands of the ESG era.

Specifically, the series will introduce the definitions and methodologies of ESG, considering both domestic and international contexts, along with corporate circumstances. Its overarching goal is to cultivate expertise in this domain and expand the international network for future endeavors.

Professor Ok Yong-sik emphasized the need for South Korean universities to not only excel in research but also effectively disseminate their findings. He sees the Global Sustainability Lecture Series as an avenue for South Korea to spearhead discussions on sustainable development. Through this initiative, he intends to elevate South Korea's global standing and share significant research outcomes, particularly in key areas like ESG, with the aspiration of enhancing the rankings of South Korean universities on the global stage.
