Indonesian Students Pursue Global Business Aspirations at City University

  • Two Indonesian students have embarked on their journey towards global business success at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), drawn by the city’s unique East-West blend and its vibrant, diverse environment. Wibisono Verena Andrea and Periatna Kevin Frans are both enrolled in the BBA Global Business (GBU) programme, which is renowned for its comprehensive approach to international business education.

Wibisono Verena Andrea, a fourth-year student, has long been captivated by Hong Kong's dynamic landscape. “Ever since high school, Hong Kong stood out as the destination I wanted to be”, she said. She believes that CityUHK’s GBU programme is perfectly aligned with her career aspirations, offering the flexibility to tailor her studies according to her interests. This adaptability, coupled with the university's diverse environment, was a key factor in her decision to study there.

In addition to her major in GBU, Verena is pursuing double minors in Information Management and Sustainability. She is actively involved in the Global Business Civitas, a student-led organization that offers networking opportunities and access to a career repository. During the summer, Verena interned at AIA Group’s Hong Kong headquarters as a strategy intern, focusing on healthcare projects across Asia. Her role involved working on strategies aligned with her prior experience in consulting and strategy. “I really enjoyed this role. I got to learn a lot, especially being in a big corporation”, she noted.

Periatna Kevin Frans, a second-year student, is still navigating his options for the compulsory semester-based overseas exchange opportunities, weighing choices between the UK and other Asian countries. Reflecting on his initial adjustment as an international student, Kevin recalled the GBU programme's welcome event, which helped him bond with his peers and build connections with alumni and seniors. “When I first arrived in Hong Kong, the GBU programme held an event where we and all cohorts were invited for a dinner. This allowed us to know our cohort better, and also create a new bond as a GBU student with alumni and our seniors,” he shared.

Kevin has also benefited from participating in the Executive Mentoring Programme (EMP), which provides professional training through workshops and offers insights into the industry. This programme has been instrumental in helping him set personal development goals and expand his professional network. Kevin recently completed an internship at Garuda Indonesia Hong Kong, where he assisted in projects aimed at increasing the Breakeven Load Factor and updated data daily.

Both Verena and Kevin are enthusiastic about their experiences at CityUHK. Verena plans to continue her career in Hong Kong after graduation, while Kevin looks forward to exploring new opportunities and further developing his skills.

CityUHK’s status as the 'Most International University in the World' according to the 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings reflects its rapid growth in regional cooperation and global outreach. The university is expanding its connections along the Belt and Road Initiative and has recently forged partnerships with three prestigious institutions in Indonesia. These collaborations aim to attract more talented students to CityUHK and strengthen Hong Kong’s position as an international hub for higher education.

In addition to its current offerings, CityUHK has introduced a series of Flagship Programmes for the 2024/25 academic year. These programmes include the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine, BBA Global Business, Global Research Enrichment and Technopreneurship, and the Pathway for Research, Innovation, and Multinational Engineering. Each programme is designed to provide students with essential knowledge, skills, and global leadership abilities, along with opportunities to connect with leading professionals.

Starting from the 2025/26 academic year, CityUHK will expand its Flagship Programmes to include nine options. New additions will be: BSocSc in Psychology with a focus on Wellbeing Enhancement and Care Management (WE-CARE), Creative Arts and Technology Excellence, Data Empowerment: Learn, Transform and Achieve, International Sustainability Programme for Innovation, Research and Entrepreneurship, and Bachelor of Laws.

CityUHK’s commitment to innovation and global education continues to attract students from around the world, providing them with a comprehensive and diverse academic experience in one of Asia’s most vibrant cities.
