He highlighted that the university has been chosen as a global hub by the United Nations and other partners to advance the Sustainable Development Goals through research, community engagement, and academic excellence. He made this statement during the inauguration of De Montfort University Cambodia in Phnom Penh.
Simultaneously, the premier noted that De Montfort University's presence would act as a catalyst for enhancing the quality of higher education in Cambodia and expanding options for the Cambodian education and student market. Mr. Hun Manet emphasized that the university could play a key role in preventing brain drain by offering education and job opportunities within Cambodia. He expressed his belief that this development provides a valuable opportunity for students to experience the benefits of the British education system without leaving their home country.
On the occasion, the premier added that the university would also offer opportunities for Cambodian students to gain short-term and long-term higher education experiences in the United Kingdom or other countries. By having a direct presence in Cambodia, this university will contribute to cultivating culture and understanding of the international environment, alongside fostering values and the development of Cambodian society.
He further emphasized that the Royal Government is dedicated to prioritizing "people" in the nation’s development efforts to achieve high-income status in accordance with Cambodia Vision 2050. De Montfort University (DMU), one of the UK’s most esteemed higher education institutions, was founded in 1870 and has been in operation for over 150 years.
