Students of Philippine Science High School once more proved to be among the best in the world after winning top places in the just-concluded 10th ASEAN Student Science Project Competition at the National Science Museum in Thailand.
As such, the students from PSHS Main Campus Mayreen Angela Habal, Laurice Reign Lanto, and Mackenzie Kobe Gabriel San Agustin placed First Prize with their entry in this prestigious event. Entitled "Investigation of Enhanced Stability and Drug Release of Chitosan-Alginate Nanoparticles Conjugated with Hexametaphosphate for Drug Delivery", their presentation took top prize in the Applied Science Category.
On the other hand, PSHS Ilocos Region Campus students Gean Draexi Corpuz, Arianne Gayle Laeno, and Sidney Lawrence Mendiola placed 2nd Runner-Up in the Biological Sciences category. Their entry, "Molecular Detection of Antibiotic-resistant Gastrointestinal Bacteria from Broiler Chicken in Dingras, Ilocos Norte", garnered awards such as Gold Award and Most Popular Research Award.
Students from ASEAN countries, specifically Thailand, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Cambodia, and the Philippines, participated in the July 2-7 competition.
It marked an achievement following the pay dirt of students at PSHS - Central Visayas Campus last year, essentially proving that it has consistently been so in terms of regional and global science competitions.
Initiated by Thailand's National Science Museum and Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation in 2015, as well as by the Science Society of Thailand, one of the aims and objectives of ASPC is to enrich students with innovative science projects in 21st-century skills and foster regional cooperation among ASEAN countries, including friendship.
PSHS has a reputation to back it up, hailed as one of the institutions to bring home international laurels, specifically in the International Geography Olympiad and International Mathematical Olympiad, further underpinning the excellence bestowed within the institution in the area of science education.
With all their feats at ASPC 2024, this only underscores the achievements not just of their dedication and ingenuity but of the Philippines slowly rising in the fields of science worldwide.
